What is Kybella?

Kybella is identical to a substance your body makes called deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring enzyme that helps to digest dietary fats. Kybella treats double-chin fat and is an alternative to liposuction or surgery.

How Does Kybella Work?

Kybella works by destroying fat cells. It was approved by the FDA for this indication in April of 2015. As noted by the FDA, if not used correctly, Kybella can also destroy other kinds of cells, including skin cells. This highlights the need for administration by appropriately trained and credentialed providers.

Does Kybella Really Work? How Many Treatments are Required to See Results?

Kybella works. Patients might need a series of anywhere from 12-20 injections per session, although some may receive up to 50 injections in a single visit. 2-6 total sessions might be required, spaced about 1 month apart. Each treatment takes approximately 15 minutes. Many patients see results after 2-4 appointments.

I’ve Heard…

Kybella is associated with many questions and misconceptions. Patients frequently want to know if Kybella will tighten skin. Kybella only destroys fat cells and will not firm the complexion.

Whether Kybella leaves behind loose skin will depend on your age and skin condition. In patients with good skin elasticity, the skin will retract to a normal position after the fat melts away. Patients seeking skin tightening should consider SkinTyte. Some patients have heard that Kybella makes the double chin larger.

This is not true. The swelling is temporary and will not permanently enlarge the submental region. If you have other concerns, Jill Canes would be happy to discuss them with you during your consultation.

Kybella at Face Forward Medical Aesthetics in Lexington, MA

At Face Forward Medical Aesthetics, we believe that the best results are achieved when a true partnership forms. As part of your consultation, Jill Canes will listen to your concerns with your chin and explain the most effective and realistic anti-aging treatment options.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

Multiple small doses of Kybella are injected directly into the submental fat pad (double chin area) using a fine needle in a grid pattern. Swelling will occur, but for most patients, it doesn’t last long. Your swelling will typically peak about 20-28 hours after your procedure and will likely go away after 48 hours. On rare occasions, you can experience swelling for longer, depending on the dosage you receive and your particular skin.

Patients with large amounts of submental fat and sagging skin may experience more swelling. Since swelling can be significant for the first 48 hours after your treatment, we recommend you plan your work week or social calendar accordingly.
