Treatment of Sun Damage, Age Spots, and Redness

If only we could go back and tell our younger selves as we blissfully tanned on the beach or by the pool that the gorgeous tan just isn’t worth it! As the saying goes, “Youth is wasted on the young.” And we wouldn’t have listened to our own advice anyway. When we prioritize tanning, our skin pays the ultimate price. The effects of sun exposure and the natural changes in skin collagen over time cause the telltale signs of aging: freckles, age spots, small blood vessel prominence, and skin laxity. The solution is light-based skin rejuvenation.

IPL

Let’s Start With the Basics. What is an IPL Photofacial?

IPL stands for “Intense Pulse Light” and is a well-established means of treating skin redness and improving the appearance of aging skin. With IPL, light energy of a precise wavelength is absorbed by damaged skin, raising its temperature. The cells respond by producing more collagen, which softens the appearance of aging skin, fades age spots and pigmentation, improves fine lines and wrinkles, and reduces pore size. Multiple treatments produce the best results after IPL. An IPL photofacial is a cornerstone of skin rejuvenation because it produces superior outcomes with no downtime.

What is BBL BroadBand Light?

BroadBand Light or BBL is considered “best in class” IPL. When patients are considering photofacials, the IPL vs. BBL distinction always comes up. BBL is a proprietary technology developed by Sciton using pulsed light. BBL light energy allows your clinician to design treatments personalized for your skin and precisely treat age and sun spots, small facial veins, and many other skin defects.

A sapphire crystal with built-in cooling technology and thermoelectric sensors adjusts the treatment to maintain skin temperature within 1 degree of tolerance. This allows higher energy to be used safely, minimizing the number of treatments required and achieving better results.

How Does BBL Work?

BBL deposits pulses of light energy that gently heat the upper layers of skin. Within the skin, the light energy is absorbed by targets, such as fine, broken vessels that cause redness and brown spots or pigmented lesions that are caused by an overproduction of melanin. This scientific and biological process destroys the target, eliminating it from the skin and restoring the complexion’s natural beauty, blending its natural tones and making it more vibrant and youthful.

Forever Young BBL

Forever Young BBL treatments are maintenance treatments to keep the skin looking young. In a blinded analysis of patient photos, dermatologists rated patients who had received regular Forever Young BBL treatments on average 9 years younger than their actual age.

Forever Young BBL is the only treatment that has been shown to change the expression of genes associated with aging, longevity, and increased lifespan. With regular treatments, your skin can look smoother, clear, and younger. A large Stanford University study suggested that if you take aging skin and alter its gene expression, it can become more like youthful skin.

Forever Clear BBL

Forever Clear BBL is a cutting-edge acne treatment that uses the power of light to comfortably and effectively clear acne (in teenagers and adults) without creams or medicine.

Blue BBL light eliminates acne-causing bacteria at its source, deep down in the pores. Yellow BBL light reduces inflammation and acne-associated redness to give you healthy, luminous skin. Infra-red light initiates the body’s natural healing process.

Forever Bare BBL

Forever Bare BBL from Sciton is a revolutionary technology for hair removal. Traditionally, hair removal devices apply all of their energy to any given area all at once. By sending multiple lower energy pulses at a high repetition rate, Forever Bare BBL provides a treatment that is safe, fast, effective, and comfortable. The motion BBL technology allows for extremely even heating of hair follicles and minimizes missed areas that occur with traditional hair removal devices. Before and after photos can be found here.

What will happen during the procedure?

Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or “rubber band snap” sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas. Your procedure may take a few minutes to a half an hour, depending on the size of the area to be treated and the type of procedure performed. Your Lexington, MA BBL photofacial clinician will discuss all of your options with you.

Will it be uncomfortable?

The procedure is gentle, non-invasive, and safe. Generally, there is no need for a topical anesthetic, but your clinician may choose to use it on more sensitive areas.

What should I expect after the treatment?

You may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours. Pigmented lesions will darken and gradually flake off over the next 7-10 days. Often your treated skin will feel smoother, fine lines and pores begin to be less noticeable, and sunspots or uneven pigmentation will fade. Results depend on your skin’s condition, the number of treatments, and the area treated. Your clinician will provide you with complete information about the post-treatment care and results.

How long will it take to recover?

This is a non-invasive and gentle procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you are able to return to work, apply makeup, and resume most of your activities immediately.
