What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation procedure in which tiny needles create micro-punctures in the top layer of skin. The goal is to improve the overall texture and appearance by harnessing the skin’s own repair process. Microneedling can be combined with various topicals such as hyaluronic acid, anti-oxidants, or a patient’s own plasma (see PRP below). The micro-channels formed during microneedling allow products to penetrate much deeper into the skin than they normally would.

How Does Microneedling Work?

When the skin is wounded, it has an incredible capacity to repair itself. The natural process of wound repair involves local liberation of growth factors, which form new healthy collagen. Collagen is a fibrous protein that provides support and cushioning in the skin.  When a wound is repaired and new collagen is encouraged to grow, the term “collagen induction therapy” starts to make sense. This is the scientific concept behind the treatment now known as microneedling.

Microneedling at Home vs. in Medical Spa

Home microneedling devices do not achieve the deep penetration (typically 0.5 mm) that is possible with a proper microneedling device. SkinPen can achieve up to 3mm needle penetration.

What is Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling can be combined with topical serums on the skin. A popular combination uses a portion of your own blood, called platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

The procedure involves drawing blood from your arm and spinning it on a centrifuge, creating three separated “layers” of serum: platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and red blood cells.

PRP is very rich in growth factors, which are infused into your skin via microneedling. A needle pen is applied across your face while the platelets are dropped into the mini injection holes. Since the platelets are high in growth hormones and microneedling stimulates the skin to regenerate, the entire procedure brilliantly aids cell turnover. The results can mimic a facelift, but with zero downtime.

Microneedling at Face Forward Medical Aesthetics in Lexington, MA

FFMA was founded on a number of core principles, one of the most important being that we would only use the “best-in-class” tools for each treatment. Multiple devices are available for microneedling, but only SkinPen by Bellus Medical is FDA-cleared. This is why we chose their microneedling device as best-in-class.

What Should I Expect During Treatment? After Treatment?

The skin needs to be thoroughly cleansed of makeup and bacteria to ensure that no infection occurs after microneedling. A topical numbing agent is applied to the skin for about 20 minutes before the procedure. Immediately after the procedure, pinpoint bleeding is sometimes seen. Redness or pinkness is common on the first day. Roughness and small red marks may be visible the next day. Downtime is about 48 hours. Optimal results are achieved with a series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

What are the Side Effects of Microneedling?

If done properly, side effects are extremely rare. It’s normal for the skin to feel tight, warm, and itchy for several days. Redness is common but subsides rapidly.

Face Forward Medical Aesthetics has the only FDA-cleared microneedling device.
