What is the Plasma Pen?

The Plasma Pen applies a controlled electrical micropulse to the air next to the outer layer of your skin, or epidermis. In fact, the device tip doesn’t even touch the skin itself. Plasma is the fourth state of matter (after solid, liquid, and gas).

A generator in the handpiece creates a pulse of energy, which strips the electrons off the nitrogen gas particles hovering in the air right above the top layer of your skin, a process called ionization. Adding heat to this gas layer creates plasma. You can think of it like a tiny welding arc or a minuscule spark of lightning.

This plume of plasma heats the skin, creating a tiny thermal injury, which in turn stimulates wound healing. This process jump-starts your fibroblasts into producing more collagen, and most importantly, results in skin contraction and tightening.

What About the Plasma Pen vs. Laser Therapy or the Plasma Pen vs. Microneedling?

The most effective anti-aging cosmetic treatments have one feature in common: they create controlled minor trauma to the skin to induce your body’s own capacity to regenerate. These procedures reduce fine lines and wrinkles, rejuvenate the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin, even skin tone by removing pigmented spots, improve textures, and diminish the appearance of scars.

Some procedures do this mechanically (dermaplaning), chemically (chemical peels), by creating microscopic laser channels (Halo laser resurfacing), or by superheating fine needle punctures within the dermis (RF microneedling). However, in some delicate parts of the face and body, energy delivered by needles or lasers may be too deep or deliver too much heat to be safe.

One example is around the eyes, for droopy eyelids or crepey skin. Another example is fine lines around the lips or perioral skin. In these areas, more pinpointed deliberate artistry needs to be applied to achieve the desired effect, and Plasma Pen technology fills this gap.

What Should I Expect Before, During, and After Subnovii Plasma Pen Treatment?

Before any plasma fibroblast treatment, we first make sure that the procedure is appropriate for your aesthetic goals, skin type, and budget. Numbing cream will be applied to your clean, makeup-free skin, and allowed to take effect. During the treatment, pain and discomfort are minimal for most patients. The skin will feel warm for about 2 hours. After your treatment, you will see rows of tiny plasma pen dots. These are tiny scabs that fall off in 5-7 days. You will have some redness and swelling that subsides over a period of 1-3 days post-procedure.

I Have Hooded Eyelids or Droopy Eyelids. Will the Subnovii Plasma Pen Work?

If the Plasma Pen treatment is applied to the appropriate patient, a dramatic eye lift can be achieved. As with any cosmetic procedure, individual results may vary, and depending on the degree of skin laxity and other factors, a surgical blepharoplasty may be more appropriate for some patients.

At Face Forward Medical Aesthetics in Lexington, MA, we aim to match the right procedure with the right patient, and we will be honest with you if we believe a non-surgical blepharoplasty with the Subnovii Plasma Pen has a good chance at achieving a desirable cosmetic benefit.

Is the Subnovii Plasma Pen Appropriate for Perioral Wrinkles or Lines Around the Mouth?

For lip lines or lip wrinkles, sometimes referred to as smoker’s lips, the Plasma Pen is an appropriate potential solution. These vertical lines form through repeated muscle contractions when the lips are pursed. This can be a challenging area to treat since fillers may not solve the problem, and while deep laser resurfacing works well, some patients may want a procedure with less downtime, such as Subnovii Plasma Pen treatment.

Does the Plasma Pen really work?

Choosing the best technology to treat a patient’s aesthetic concerns depends on many factors: the extent of photodamage, depth of wrinkles, degree of baseline skin elasticity, skin type/color, and perhaps most importantly, tolerability of downtime. For the appropriate patient, scientific studies suggest that nitrogen plasma skin rejuvenation is effective. For example, one study of eye wrinkles where one eye was treated and the other left untreated showed significant improvements on the treated side.

Can the Plasma Pen leave scars?

Any energy-based device has the potential to cause scarring, but for the Plasma Pen, this risk is considered extremely low. The vast majority of patients will not scar. If you have a personal history of keloids or hypertrophic scars, please alert us prior to the procedure.

Can you undergo BOTOX after the Plasma Pen?

You should delay BOTOX treatment for 3-4 weeks after the Plasma Pen.

Is the Plasma Pen FDA-approved?

The Subnovii Plasma Pen is FDA-cleared and is the first plasma device that uses LF+ technology: low-frequency + a patented wavelength and power combination. This allows for more precise applications and reduced healing time.

Is the Plasma Pen better than BOTOX?

The Plasma Pen and BOTOX approach wrinkles in completely different ways. BOTOX limits muscle movement and muscle contraction that cause creases in the overlying skin. If BOTOX is consistently applied and started at a younger age, it may even prevent future wrinkles from forming.

In contrast, the Plasma Pen addresses static wrinkles (which are present at rest) as well as loose skin by tightening the complexion and by causing your skin fibroblasts to pump out more collagen. Collagen is the skin’s underlying scaffold. This entire repair process remodels the wrinkle itself to make it less visible. Plasma Pen results can last 2-3 years and, in some cases, even longer.

Neither BOTOX nor plasma resurfacing is better. Rather, the appropriate approach must be tailored to the individual patient, the location of the wrinkle(s), and other factors.

How long does the plasma eyelid lift last?

Plasma eyelid lift results should last 2-3 years but will vary on an individual basis. As your skin continues to age, touch-up treatments could be required.

Does the plasma eye lift work?

Yes. Although some patients need a blepharoplasty by a plastic surgeon if the aging eye changes are severe, for the appropriate patient, scientific studies suggest that the plasma eye lift as a non-surgical blepharoplasty is effective. For example, one study of eye wrinkles in which one eye was treated and the other left untreated showed significant improvements on the treated side.

How long do the dots last after plasma?

Plasma dots on the skin typically last 5-7 days.

Is plasma skin tightening safe?

Plasma skin tightening by licensed and trained professionals is a safe procedure. Temporary dots, redness, inflammation, and swelling are common. Scarring, or changes to skin pigmentation, are exceedingly rare.
